Emotional intelligence
Submitted by Elizabeth Knapp (not verified) on March 3, 2008 - 11:27.
I graduated from East in 2006 and now I am going to St. Olaf College, today in my education psychology class we watched this video and discussed if we need to understand emotional intelligence do academically better in school. I felt like you guys did a great job at showing the different programs in the Anchorage area and how they approach expressing emotion! It was great seeing faces that I recognize and hearing "Change of Heart" again!
Nourishing the Inner Lives of Students

It is so inspiring to hear educators making space for kids to be fully present and learning engaging the spectrum of brains, spirit, heart, and emotions.
This video also reminds me of the incredible work that Rachel Kessler has dedicated her own life to nourishing the inner lives of kids. She now has several whole school projects that are finding similar successes. You will find her book, The Soul of Education, to be another great resource if the stories here touch your heart.
I am going to be contributing my own work of digital storytelling to Rachel's project this spring. We will be coaching teachers and students in crafting their own narrative digital storytelling unfolding a story that needs to be told. These collection of narrative, multi-media stories will incorporate a range of personal perspectives of how making room for EQ and giving space to student voices has touched or made a difference in their lives along with a lesson learned. Sign up at DigiTales.us website for notification when these stories are completed or just check in from time to time.
Thank you GLEF for documenting this story and as always holding hope for all of us that real and meaningful classrooms are still possible for kids in the present political climate. Thank you - thank you Anchorage teachers and students for the amazing committment you have made to incorporating meaningful heartful experiences for everyone. LOVE the chorus Change of Heart!

Fantastic! Vicky, Jan, Julie, Daryl, Stan, Janie, Trudy, Chris, Mike G, Carol...WELL DONE! I know all the hard work that has gone into these programs (AVB & COH) and I know it is working! Both of my kids attended and graduated from the Anchorage School District and approve of these programs. When our children approve and use programs like these, it makes a difference! KEEP IT UP! To Michael and the rest of the SDFS staff: you should be very proud of the work you have done and continue to do. I am honored to have been a small part of your work and lives.
Scott

What a wonderful story. They really spent a lot of time planning and organizing the curriculum. It seems to have paid off.

I am both a student at East Anchorage High School and a trainer for the program Change of Heart at the school. I just wanted to thank the George Lucas Educational Foundation for putting this up. This progream has definitly made a difference in the school district's environment, and I know for a fact that because of these curriculum changes and adaptations, students feel safe and at home in their schools, which makes for more learning.

I'm sorry that the video isn't playing all the way through for you. I had no trouble viewing it. Watching video on the Internet is most effective if you have a high-speed Internet line such as cable or DSL.
Educating Hearts: Anchorage School District

My niece is currently a teacher at the High School and she sent this link to her family for us to watch.
I am VERY impressed with what the teachers and staff are doing for these kids. I wish ALL schools would adopt these principles and have them available to help our kids of today, who many of which are living in troubled homes.
I am proud to have a family member who works in this system and applaud the Anchorage School District!!
